Computer & Technology

In an ever-growing world of technology, SLKF produces confident and competent students by introducing digital literacy, fundamental computer skills, and encouraging creativity when designing digital content. Kindergarten through 7th grade students learn skills ranging from typing, identifying hardware and software, word processing, creating videos, exploring computer programs, and photography. Students are well-versed in the importance of online safety and how to utilize the internet properly for research purposes and to enhance learning across all academic subjects. Middle school students have the opportunity to produce, direct, create, anchor, and broadcast SLKF’s very own news station, WBUK-TV!

Library

The SLKF Library houses over 10,000 titles with inviting and comfortable seating areas for avid readers, researching students, group activities, and teacher planning to unfold. PK2 through 7th grade homerooms have been provided with scheduled times to utilize the library without disruption. Teachers also plan lessons, projects, and group activities during available times. Students are allowed to check out books for research or to enjoy a good book in their free time.

Music

SLKF PK1-7th grade students are immersed in a world of musical notes, instruments, vocal sounds, and joyful noise! Students explore musical concepts and notation recognition, reading sheet music, learning the recorder and piano, composing music, playing countless instruments, and learning about vocal health. Students are introduced to an array of classical, liturgical, Broadway, Gospel tunes, and much more. Middle school students have an opportunity to join the Crusader Choir and audition for our annual drama production.

Physical Education

Movement and exercise are integral to a child’s growth and development. SLKF’s P.E. classes begin in our PK1 classes and continue through 7th grade. Younger students are introduced to basic physical skills such as ball handling, hand-eye coordination, turn-taking, and following directions. Sports skills and health are continuously taught throughout the years. Leadership skills are an important component of P.E. classes. P.E. class focuses on individual growth and development and not on skill level. For those students who excel in athletic sports, competitive team sports are offered for older students as an after-school activity. As teams are chosen and sports seasons progress, P.E. classes are utilized to enhance the skills needed for each sport to develop strong, effective athletes.

Spanish

Learning a foreign language enhances a student’s memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills while magnifying their academic performance and cultural awareness. Studying Spanish at SLKF prepares our students for their future foreign language education in high school and beyond. PK1 through 7th grade students attend a weekly Spanish class as they learn the basics, such as numbers, colors, basic greetings, and rudimentary vocabulary, and progress to more complex conversation skills, grammar lessons, and basic writing skills.

Speech and Debate

SLKF Middle School students participate in Speech & Debate class to promote their confidence in speaking to a group, effective communication skills, and critical thinking abilities. Communication is a necessary life skill that allows each of us to share our thoughts and ideas with the world. SLKF’s Speech & Debate class allows our students to mature into eloquent, articulate, and fluent speakers who can command the attention of those around them. SLKF students are thrust into the high school arena with the skills and knowledge of how to remain poised and confident.
